Social Program

Social events are an important part of a conference, providing opportunities to strengthen networks within a social context, while providing conference delegates with a chance to simply unwind. A number of social events are currently being planned.

 

For the gala dinner, the lunches, meals during the breaks and the peak-nic during the excursions, the approach of sustainable development was engaged with the caterer of the Popes' Palace.  More info, click here

Welcome Reception – Monday 23 August 2010 (4 pm - 8 pm)

A welcome reception cocktail party will officially open the conference on the evening of Monday, 23 August 2010.  The cocktail party will be hosted from 4 pm - 8 pm in the Popes’Palace Convention Center in the Grande Audience room where delegates can enjoy the spirit of the former “Court of the Popes”. Drinks and nibbles will be served. The night will also provide delegates an opportunity to visit the registration desk open from 4 pm - 8 pm in the Salle des Gardes formerly the “Guardroom” of the Popes’ Palace.

The “Bouteillerie” Wine Cellar at the Popes" Palace 23 – 27 August 2010

The wines grown along the banks of the Rhone river have undergone many changes since the Middle Ages and the Côtes du Rhône vineyards now stand among the greatest French AOC regions. The city of Avignon, capital of the Côtes du Rhône wines, quite naturally promotes these wines which are an inherent part of its culture. The Wine Cellar at the Palace of the Popes, known as the “Bouteillerie”, has taken a resolutely educational approach to the Côtes du Rhône wines, offering the public a “guided” wine tasting of over forty wine choices selected by a committee of wine professionals and enthusiastic amateurs in a blind selection process.The objective at the Bouteillerie is to help the visitors to the Palace of the Popes, who come from around the world, to learn more about the quality and diversity of the Côtes du Rhône wines, thus enabling them to be ambassadors upon their return to their home countries.However, the Bouteillerie at the Palace of the Popes is by no means reserved for tourists ! Local Avignon residents find excellent wine choices, and can get advice and recommendations from the professional staff, thus continuing to discover Côtes du Rhône wines and making judicious choices. The Bouteillerie has been set up in the former Artillery Room at the back of the palace. Open since July 1999, it provides a very friendly, pleasant space where sommeliers are at your service 365 days a year.

The Bouteillerie is open every day during Palace visiting hours. Entrance is free of charge (Access via the Place de l’Amirande, or through the main entrance to the Palace).

L’objectif est de sensibiliser les visiteurs du Palais des Papes à la qualité et à la diversité des Côtes du Rhône.Mais la Bouteillerie du Palais des Papes n’est pas exclusivement réservée aux touristes, les Avignonnais y trouvent l’écoute et le conseil de professionnels susceptibles de les guider dans leurs choix, mais aussi dans leur désir de découverte. Visit of Avignon City Center Tuesday 24 August 2010

Strolling in the streets of Avignon with the tour guides of the Tourist Office, you will discover the different facets of the town. They will make you love Avignon, telling you the great history (medieval Bridge, and Palace, churches, mansions …) as well as the little story. This city tour discusses also the extraordinary development Avignon underwent due to the arrival of the Popes in the 14th century (city planning, cardinals’ palaces, city mansions, the Jewish presence and the Synagogue, organisation of the city and city life at the time, the trades, the markets …).

 

 

Visit of Avignon' University Thursday 26 August 2010

Established more than 700 years ago, the University of Avignon is partly settled since 1997 in the ancient Saint - Marthe hospital, that was built between 1605 and 1835. Today, 7 000 students are present in the campus city center dedicated to Education and Research, these buildings counting among the most beautiful of France.

 

 

 

Visit of the Popes’Palace Thursday 26 August 2010

Visits of the Popes’Palace will be organised in English or French on Thursday 26 August 2010 at 7:30 pm for delegates and accompanying persons. Please, check your choice (English or French) in the registration form. Let's meet in the Salle des Gardes at 7:30 pm in the Salle des Gardes to start the visit.

Nothing remains of the Episcopal Palace built by John XXII on the Rocher des Doms except the plans. The work carried out in the "Old Palace" by Benedict XII started in 1335 with the building of a donjon outside the Palace, called the "Tower of Angels" protected by ramparts with adjoining private apartments, and followed by the building of the Great Chapel, parallel to the Cathedral. Between 1338 and 1342, the different wings of the old Episcopal palace were pulled down, then rebuilt around a cloister flanked by two sturdy towers. This fortress Palace combined power with austerity. After building the Tower of the Wardrobe against the southern side of the Tower of Angels in 1342, Clement VI undertook the "Opus Novum" in 1344 with the Great Audience room which was situated above the Great Chapel. The layout of the Great Dignitaries wing at right angles created the shape of the impressive large Honour Courtyard. Military preoccupations no longer prevailed as the elegance of the façades indicated. Inside the Palace, the ever-present intersecting ribs create some beautiful sculpted decors.

Du palais épiscopal qu’occupa Jean XXII sur le rocher des Doms, ne demeure que le plan. Les travaux du "palais vieux" de Benoît XII commencèrent en 1335 par la construction à l'extérieur du palais d'un donjon, "la Tour des Anges", que l'on flanqua d'appartements privés et protégea d'un rempart, puis celle de la Grande Chapelle, parallèle à la Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms. De 1338 à 1342, on démolit et rebâtit les différentes ailes de l'ancien palais épiscopal autour d'un cloître flanqué de deux tours puissantes, donnant à ce palais l'allure d'une austère et puissante forteresse. Après la construction en 1342 de la Tour de la Garde-Robe, contre la face méridionale de la Tour des Anges, Clément VI entreprit en 1344 "l'Opus Novum" par la salle de la Grande Audience, surmontée de la Grande Chapelle. L'édification de l'aile des Grands Dignitaires, en retour d'équerre, permit de délimiter une vaste et imposante Cour d'Honneur. Le souci de défense se fait moins visible, les façades en sont plus élégantes. A l'intérieur, les croisées d'ogive abondent et permettent l'apparition de beaux décors sculptés.

EXCEPTIONAL FRESCOES

As early as 1343, Matteo Giovannetti of Viterbo was at the head of important groups of painters coming from all over Europe. After the decoration of the Tower of the Wardrobe (the Stag Room) he was entrusted by Clement VI with the decoration of the Old Palace : Saint Martial's and Saint John's Chapel. In 1352 Matteo Giovannetti began decorating the Great Audience room. The frescoes which are still intact make up an exceptional work, one of the most interesting features of the Palace, and represent the supreme artistic quality of the first school of Avignon.

Dès 1343, Matteo Giovanetti, originaire de Viterbe, dirige d'importantes équipes de peintres venus de toute l'Europe. Clément VI, après la décoration de la Tour de la Garde-Robe (Chambre du Cerf) lui confie celles du Palais Vieux : chapelles Saint-Martial et Saint-Jean. En 1352, Matteo Giovanetti entreprend les décors de la Grande Audience. Les fresques encore conservées constituent un ensemble exceptionnel et témoignent de la haute qualité artistique de la première école d'Avignon.

AFTER THE POPES...

After the Popes' departure, the city-state of Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin remained the property of the Holy See and the Palace was used as a residence for the Papal legates, then for Italian vice-legates, until these territories were united with France in 1791 during the French Revolution, when it was looted. Until 1906, it was used as barracks. Nowadays it belongs to the city of Avignon and is one of the French historical monuments most visited by tourists.

Après le départ des Papes, la Ville-Etat d'Avignon et le Comtat Venaissin demeurèrent propriété du Saint-Siège et le Palais servit de résidence à des légats, puis à des vice-légats italiens jusqu'à la réunion de ces territoires à la France en 1791, pendant la Révolution. Pillé en ces temps troublés, il fut ensuite utilisé comme caserne jusqu'en 1906.

Visit of the Requien'Museum Friday 27 August 2010

Since the end of the twentieth century the collections of the Musée Requien have been enriched by many donations from local collectors and throught the museum’s own efforts. Among the most remarkable are Requien’s, Loiseleur-Deslongchamps’and Jean-Henri Fabre’s herbaria, Bulot’s series of mid-Cretaceous ammonites, Pélissier’s carabids, and the brown bear fossils from Mont Ventoux.

A Renowned Scientist : Esprit Requien (1788-1852)

Esprit Requien a devoted botanist from an early age, whose herbarium rapidly gained and international reputation. As a forerunner of phytosociology, he described the levels of vegetation of Mount Ventoux. His eclecticism extended more or less into all branches of science. The great savants of his day paid him homage by naming species after him, and himself discovered of several genera. Besides his scientific pursuits, he was the inspector of historical monuments.In this capacity, along with his friend Prosper Mérimée, he opposed the plans to demolish Avignon’s ramparts, which are today one of the highlights of the papal city.

The Museum

The Musée Requien maintains two permanent exhibitions, Plongée dans le temps (Submerged in time) and Faune vauclusienne (The Fauna of the Vaucluse). From gypsum crystal to a giant white shark, delicate starfish to fish imprinted on stone, Plongée dans le temps bears witness to the evolution of paleo- and bio-diversity before the advent of human influence on the environment. Faune vauclusienne offers views of the richness of the two main animal habitats of the region, those of the rockly bluffs and riverside, and divulges the habits of the last great indigenous predators of the nineteenth century, the bear and the wolf.In addition, the museum possesses a library of more than 18,000 volumes ; These include the library developed under Exprit Requien (works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and approximately 100 revues that may be consulted in situ, accessible upon demand.
